The central Vietnam city of Hoi An has been crowned as the world’s best city in the prestigious Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards for 2019.
Hoi An, a firm favourite with foreign and domestic tourists alike, topped the awards, jumping up from it No.8 place last year. It was lauded as a “charmer of a city” and won praise for its shopping and food.
I was there for a couple of days in 2014 and was impressed by the architecture and nightlife. It just, however, felt a tad touristy for my taste. But each to his own. I would have stayed longer but had arranged a pick up for a motorbike road trip along the Ho Chi Minh trail, which was quite definitely the best thing I did when traveling in Vietnam. But that’s another story.
