Vietnam is more than a war

Fifty years after the end of the war, Vietnam is still being framed and referenced as a war movie.

The latest cinematic offering is Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan which recalls a pivotal battle in south Vietnam when for some four hours, 108 Australian soldiers were pinned down by a force of North Vietnamese and Vietcong fighters roughly 2,000 strong.

While historically important, the American War of Resistance, as it is known in Vietnam, is a snapshot in time far removed from the modern country that this South East Asian nation is rapidly becoming. Visit any of the key battlegrounds along the Ho Chi Minh trail now and it is hard to imagine the death and destruction amidst the calm greenery. The landscape belies little of what went on more than half a century ago.

That said the war reverberates down to the present day. Vietnamese are still being born with deformities due to Agent Orange defoliant, and people are regularly killed or injured by ordinance.

Please be sure to cast Hollywood notions of Vietnam aside and experience this amazing country for yourself without any preconceived ideas.

Vietnam, a land of staggering natural beauty and cultural complexities, of dynamic megacities and hill-tribe villages, Vietnam is both exotic and compelling. Vietnam is indeed more than a war.
